Vinyasa Flow Yoga with Mr. Fitness! Raging and glistening!

I LOVE teaching my Power Yoga classes! I teach a variety of yoga styles (relaxation, yoga for children, yoga for seniors, chair yoga etc..) but Vinyasa Flow/Power Yoga gets all my senses raging and soaring to unbelievable heights!. I am still reeling from my Power Yoga class last night at Golds Gym Orlando where the room was packed to the walls, the sweat was flowing, and the muscles were glistening and stretching to absolute perfection! Vinyasa Flow is the key to a successful and invigorating Yoga class. Below is a great article I found online and the source is on the bottom of the page. If you have questions about Vinyasa or want to attend one of my yoga classes please let me know.

~Vinyasa is a term that covers a broad range of yoga classes. The word Vinyasa means “breath-synchronized movement.” In other words, the teacher will instruct you to move from one pose to the next on an inhale or an exhale. This technique is sometimes also called Vinyasa Flow, or just Flow because of the smooth way that the poses run together and become like a dance.

This style allows for a lot of variety, but will almost certainly include Sun Salutations. If your yoga class schedule lists a Vinyasa class, expect movement, not just stretching. Whether the class is fast or slow, includes chanting, or is very alignment-oriented will depend on the individual teacher. Some very popular yoga styles, such as Ashtanga and Power Yoga, make use of the Vinyasa method, but they will be listed on a class schedule by their individual names.

Vinyasa’s strength is in its diversity. There is no single philosophy, rulebook, or sequence that teachers must follow, so there is a lot of room for individual personalities and quirks to come through. This makes it essential that you find a teacher you enjoy and can relate to. If your first Vinyasa class doesn’t rock your world, keep trying different teachers. If you enjoy having things a little loose and unpredictable and like to move, Vinyasa is probably right for you.~

Pilates Institute of America Certification

I spent the weekend getting a great certification from The Pilates Institute of America (P.I.A.). I was fortunate enough to have the classes held right here in Orlando at the Golds Gym where I teach. As a fitness instructor I am constantly striving to improve my knowledge, classes, technique, skills and all things health related. One of my resolutions for 2009 was to invest in more certifications whether they be Pilates, Yoga, Yogalates or Reformer. For more info on P.I.A. go to www.piaworkshops.com. My head is still spinning from all the good stuff I learned this weekend and I cannot wait to bring it all to you!!

What makes you get out of bed?

What makes you get out of bed in the morning? What drives you to begin your day? What inspires you and keeps you yearning for more? What is your purpose in this day?

These are some of the questions that we need to ask ourselves everyday to make sure we are on the right path. Will your day be extraordinary, merely passing, or awful? Those first few moments you are awake usually determines how it will go.

Take a few moments each morning when you awake (still in bed) and take your legs side-to-side a few times to loosen up your spine. In the morning your body is relaxed and warm and will respond well to stretching. Bring your knees into your chest and breath deeply in and out to get the lungs energized. Then reach your arms over your head and do a full body stretch to energize your spine. Do this every morning (and evening) and you will put a positive start on your day. The release of your body from the stretches will translate into your mind as well leaving you refreshed and invigorated!

Winter Solitude

I spent my Christmas break with my parents in the wonderful town of West Salem in southwest Wisconsin. West Salem will always hold my heart and the Christmas season there is beyond words...I love it so much. I stumbled across a very simple poem that captures the feeling of being outside in that cold, frigid and gorgeous weather. I spent about half my time there walking, running, leaping, snowshoeing and strutting through the frozen wilderness.

Now I am back in warm and sunny Florida...actually the lows this week are approaching the low 30's so go figure.

Pilates for Men????? Great article.

Pilates For Men Is Much More Than Losing One's Belly Fat

It Has Been Falsely Identified As A “Woman Only” Exercise But It's Origins Began With Male Soldiers

Pilates for men gives you increased strength, more endurance, agility and power. These benefits are what most men are looking for a workout to provide.

Is Pilates for men different then Pilates for women? Men have different physical structures then women, but require the same benefits of regular exercise. Men have a smaller pelvis, tighter hips and generally tighter hamstrings then women. This lack of range of motion could be why most men at some time in their lives experience some form of back pain.

What about flexibility, balance, and more energy? Do men want stronger bones, less body fat and better orgasms Of course they do, but Pilates has been falsely identified as a “woman only” exercise. People forget that Pilates was created by a man for men. The first practitioners of Pilates were soldiers, boxers, and athletes.

Over the years I’ve had many male clients and recently have been seeing more men in my studio. I’ve noticed that they break down into three categories. Men who are aging, men who are young and fit, and men who have had a significant weight loss. Their reasons for seeking out Pilates for men may be different, but they can all benefit from a Pilates regimen.

The first category, men who are aging, come to me because they are noticing a difference in how their bodies feel and they are unable to perform the same kind of exercise they did when younger. These men will benefit from more stretching to increase mobility; core strengthening for stronger backs and better posture, and exercise that is gentle on their joints. Pilates can provide all these things.

The second category, men who are young and fit, are a tricky bunch because they are already active and strong. Men who bulk up may lack flexibility but more often they are looking to gain functional strength. Perhaps they want to improve their golf game or their muscular endurance.

Maybe they are bored with their routines and want to add some variety. Pilates for men can breathe some life back into their game. The final category, men who have lost a large amount of weight, inevitably want to lose their belly fat. In other words, they lost weight and now want to tone their mid sections. Pilates, with all its attention to building stronger abs, is a perfect addition to their already successful weight loss.

Truth is, men of any age want to lose their belly fat. This is an area where men carry extra weight. Pilates, in combination with regular cardio exercise and a lean diet, can be a dynamic program for getting rid of the dreaded belly fat.

Pilates for men can improve posture, balance, stability, flexibility, coordination, endurance, and functional strength. Good things for all people!

Celebrate!!

I celebrate myself, and sing myself...

My respiration and inspiration, the beating of my heart,
the passing of blood and air through my lungs.
The sniff of green leaves and dry leaves, and of the shore and
dark-color'd sea-rocks, and of hay in the barn,

The sound of the belch'd words of my voice loos'd to the eddies of
the wind,
A few light kisses, a few embraces, a reaching around of arms,
The play of shine and shade on the trees as the supple boughs wag,
The delight alone or in the rush of the streets, or along the fields
and hill-sides,
The feeling of health, the full-noon trill, the song of me rising from bed and meeting the sun.

Stop this day and night with me and you shall possess the origin of
all poems,
You shall possess the good of the earth and sun, (there are millions
of suns left,)
You shall no longer take things at second or third hand, nor look through
the eyes of the dead, nor feed on the spectres in books,
You shall not look through my eyes either, nor take things from me,
You shall listen to all sides and filter them from your self.

Health and Fitness goals for 2009!

As the new year approaches I am setting my sights on how to deliver the best possible classes and instruction to my many clients.

Here are a few goals (some I already have set but wish to improve them with each passing day):

~Make the classes challenging for people of all fitness levels. Whoever comes through the door will get a class that will stretch, strengthen and tone their entire body and mind.

~Treat every class as if it is the only one I will ever have the privilege of teaching.

~Always be in the glorious moment of the class!

~Remember all of my clients names (which is pretty difficult with well over 10,000 fitness hungry clients!).

~To make the classes not merely a period of time where people come to attain better health but an experience/event that will be unforgettable and keep them coming back for more!

There is so much more I can write on the amazing field of health and fitness and bettering lives but will save it for another time.

Happy New Year!!

Made it home safe and am teaching at the Humane Society this Monday!

Despite the horrible winter storm that blew through the midwest this weekend I still managed to make it home...only 30 minutes late. Great! The first thing that I noticed upon walking out of the airport was that my face and feet instantly froze and fell off. At any rate it is so good to be home for the Holidays!

I will be teaching a relaxation Yoga class this Monday at The Coulee Region Humane Society in Onalaska for all their employees and volunteers. When I was home in October we did the same class and had lots of fun (and relaxation of course!). Class will be at 5:30 pm (right after work) and I am really looking forward to de-stressing this wonderful, hardworking bunch. We are also planning a Pilates class after Christmas too.

Off to take pictures of my dad, who is playing Santa at Pets Mart today!

2008 coming to a glorious end!

The end of the year is fast approaching as we reflect on all the great and exciting things that occured in our lives. This has been another whirlwind year for Mr. Fitness LLC as I have personally instructed over 700 classes in 2008! These include: Pilates Matwork, Power Yoga, Relaxation Yoga, Flow Yoga, Spinning/Indoor Cycling and Personal Training. I have had the pleasure of teaching at health clubs, hospitals, Pilates studios, schools, businesses, resorts, dance academys, Clubhouses, homes, fields, skies, planets...etc etc... you get the idea. The point being that these classes can be held just about anywhere. All you need is a mat and a bottle of water (except for Spinning of course!) and you can create the most phenominal, powerful and effective workout imaginable! You will always feel so much better during and after class then when you walked in the door! Sleeping...forget about it...you will sleep like a baby after all that toning, stretching and strenghening. There are really no side effects to these classes other then getting horribly hooked on attending.

I teach all class sizes. At some places I can pack 40, 50, or 60+ into a room or studio while others are more subtle (1-10). Whatever the class size I will work my heart out for my clients! No 2 classes are ever the same so the mind/body connection will always be fresh. After teaching thousands of classes the past few years I am only getting stronger and more confident in what I do.

Time for lunch! Keep checking back to see what I am up to and how you can be a part of it!

The more successful I am the more people I can help. Over the past few years I have worked with thousands and thousands more! Why I love teaching Group Fitness...

Here are a few reasons why I wake up every morning and am so excited to teach, teach and teach some more (Pilates, Power Yoga Relaxation Yoga, Yogalates and Spinning)!

~I meet new people everyday who are interested in improving their quality of life and those around them.
~When people come into class they are usually stiff, tired, distracted and unfocused. When they leave they are invigorated, released, calm and very focused. They always look better AND feel better.
~Only positive things happen during each and every class. People always feel so much better during and after class then when they came in the room.
~I get to delve into so much great music!
~The energy in the rooms is contagious and intoxicating and it feeds everyone!
~I get to hear my own voice! HAHA!

I will continue this in the next blog. Now that I have started I could list things for hours...and I probably will!

Tree Pose and it's amazing benefits!

I have taught thousands of yoga classes (Hatha, relaxation, Candlelight, childrens', Power etc) but there is one pose that I incorporate into every single one: The Tree Pose. A Yoga class without this powerful pose would just not work. I usually like to do a warm-up to begin the class and then head into some balance poses with Tree being the first one. It sets the stage for bringing balance to our mind, body and spirit and improves self-confidence.

Benefits
* stretches inner thighs, groin, shoulders
* strengthens thighs, calves, core, foot muscles and posture
* calms and relaxes mind (central nervous system)
* develops balance and mind/body awareness

Remember: great balance is earned, not given.

Balance the Cat Pose and it's amazing benefits!

This pose is called Balancing the Cat. You can also add movement to it by drawing the knee and opposite arm into your center and then returning to the beginning. Barb is modeling the pose for us to the left. I include this pose and it's many variations in my Pilates and yoga classes.

It creates a strong and flexible spine, teaches balance and focus, teaches the yogi to move the body with the breath, has the potential to stretch out the chest muscles (pectoralis major and minor), the hip flexors (illiacus and psoas/ iliopsoas), tones and strengthens almost every muscle in your back and backside, and stimulates the thyroid gland with the movement of the chin into the chest, then the head arching up toward the ceiling.

Namaste'!

Happy Labor Day!

All of my classes are canceled in honor of Labor Day.

I went to the hardware store and bought some used paint. It was in the shape
of a house. I also bought some batteries, but they weren't included.

Enjoy your day!

Pilates exercise: The Saw!

The saw

Sit tall, with legs extended and open slightly wide. Stretch your arms to your sides, and inhale, stretching your spine upwards. Twist from your waist to the left, and exhale as you bring your chest towards your right leg and inhale, lengthening your body up. Switch sides. Do each side 6 to 10 times.

This is my father's (seen on the left with Mr. Fitness) favorite Pilates exercise in the whole, wide world!

It is a good spine stretch, utilizing spinal rotation and the breath to increase the stretch.

Why Downward Facing Dog? I'll tell ya!

The most basic and widely-known yoga pose is down dog. Even if you've never attended a yoga class, you most likely have heard of this one. Downward facing dog has many jobs and functions, among them--assessment pose, transitional pose, resting pose, strengthening pose, inversion pose and rejuvenator. I also use it frequently in my Pilates classes to build strength and endurance.

The role of downward facing dog is vast. Done properly and consistently, the most noticeable benefits include:
  • Stronger hands, wrists, low-back, hamstrings, calves and Achilles tendon
  • Decrease in back pain by strengthening the entire back and shoulder girdle
  • Elongated shoulders and shoulder blade area
  • Decrease in tension and headaches by elongating the cervical spine and neck and relaxing the head
  • Deepened respiration
  • Decreased anxiety
  • Increased full-body circulation
Down Dog can also be used in sequences such as Sun Salutations and Vinyasa Flow. So many poses and exercises can revolve around Down Dog making it a must have in any mind/body class!

Pilates practice=Longevity

"I must be right. Never an aspirin. Never injured a day in my life. The whole country, the whole world, should be doing my exercises. They'd be happier."

- Joseph Hubertus Pilates, in 1965, age 86

Caddyshack and my Dutch hat...

Al Czervik: Oh, this is the worst-looking hat I ever saw. What, when you buy a hat like this I bet you get a free bowl of soup, huh?
[looks at Judge Smails, who's wearing the same hat]
Al Czervik: Oh, it looks good on you though.

From the movie Caddyshack

Mind/Body connection

"Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure."
-Joseph Pilates

Exercise is truly maximized when the mind and body work as one. In Pilates (and any other physical activity) your mind sees the movement and translates it to your body. When the mind and body are connected you maximize your physical, mental, and spiritual self. One of the three cannot exist by itself.

In my Pilates classes you will truly savor the way your body moves. The exercises flow from one to the other with no break so you waste no energy and achieve maximum results. I always say that you will achieve "superior results in a short amount of time". Extreme focus on your movements bring with it total and dramatic results! Efficient. Unique. Totally effective. That is what you get in my classes.

The Mayo Clinic knows...

Exercise: 7 benefits of regular physical activity

Need motivation to exercise? Here are seven ways exercise can improve your life — starting today!

Want to feel better, have more energy and perhaps even live longer? Look no further than old-fashioned exercise.

The merits of exercise — from preventing chronic health conditions to boosting confidence and self-esteem — are hard to ignore. And the benefits are yours for the taking, regardless of age, sex or physical ability. Need more convincing? Check out seven specific ways exercise can improve your life.

1. Exercise improves your mood.

Need to blow off some steam after a stressful day? A workout at the gym or a brisk 30-minute walk can help you calm down.

Exercise stimulates various brain chemicals, which may leave you feeling happier and more relaxed than you were before you worked out. You'll also look better and feel better when you exercise regularly, which can boost your confidence and improve your self-esteem. Exercise even reduces feelings of depression and anxiety.

2. Exercise combats chronic diseases.

Worried about heart disease? Hoping to prevent osteoporosis? Regular exercise might be the ticket.

Regular exercise can help you prevent — or manage — high blood pressure. Your cholesterol will benefit, too. Regular exercise boosts high-density lipoprotein (HDL), or "good," cholesterol while decreasing low-density lipoprotein (LDL), or "bad," cholesterol. This one-two punch keeps your blood flowing smoothly by lowering the buildup of plaques in your arteries.

And there's more. Regular exercise can help you prevent type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis and certain types of cancer.

3. Exercise helps you manage your weight.

Want to drop those excess pounds? Trade some couch time for walking or other physical activities.

This one's a no-brainer. When you exercise, you burn calories. The more intensely you exercise, the more calories you burn — and the easier it is to keep your weight under control. You don't even need to set aside major chunks of time for working out. Take the stairs instead of the elevator. Walk during your lunch break. Do jumping jacks during commercials. Better yet, turn off the TV and take a brisk walk. Dedicated workouts are great, but activity you accumulate throughout the day helps you burn calories, too.

4. Exercise strengthens your heart and lungs.

Winded by grocery shopping or household chores? Don't throw in the towel. Regular exercise can leave you breathing easier.

Exercise delivers oxygen and nutrients to your tissues. In fact, regular exercise helps your entire cardiovascular system — the circulation of blood through your heart and blood vessels — work more efficiently. Big deal? You bet! When your heart and lungs work more efficiently, you'll have more energy to do the things you enjoy.

5. Exercise promotes better sleep.

Struggling to fall asleep? Or stay asleep? It might help to boost your physical activity during the day.

A good night's sleep can improve your concentration, productivity and mood. And, you guessed it, exercise is sometimes the key to better sleep. Regular exercise can help you fall asleep faster and deepen your sleep. The timing is up to you — but if you're having trouble sleeping, you might want to try late afternoon workouts. The natural dip in body temperature five to six hours after you exercise might help you fall asleep.

6. Exercise can put the spark back into your sex life.

Are you too tired to have sex? Or feeling too out of shape to enjoy physical intimacy? Exercise to the rescue.

Regular exercise can leave you feeling energized and looking better, which may have a positive effect on your sex life. But there's more to it than that. Exercise improves your circulation, which can lead to more satisfying sex. And men who exercise regularly are less likely to have problems with erectile dysfunction than are men who don't exercise, especially as they get older.

7. Exercise can be — gasp — fun!

Wondering what to do on a Saturday afternoon? Looking for an activity that suits the entire family? Get physical!

Exercise doesn't have to be drudgery. Take a ballroom dancing class. Check out a local climbing wall or hiking trail. Push your kids on the swings or climb with them on the jungle gym. Plan a neighborhood kickball or touch football game. Find an activity you enjoy, and go for it. If you get bored, try something new. If you're moving, it counts!

Spinning Spinning Spinning!

I LOVE teaching Spinning! If you have never "Spun" before I highly encourage you to attend a class. The cardio benefits are amazing and it is easy on your joints. Also the music is loud and inspiring and keeps you motivated right through into the cool down.

Why should you Spin?

Burn Calories

During a 30 minute spin class you can burn 500 calories. In a short amount of time you can burn a lot of calories, thus affecting your health. Most other exercises would take at least double the time to burn so many calories. If you are looking to lose weight, there is no better option. Spinning will melt the pounds off. Many spin enthusiast also claim spinning it is the hardest and best workout they have ever found. There is no other workout that leaves me feeling like I just accomplished a huge feat and went beyond what I thought my body was capable of. And although it is "hard" in its intensity, it isn't hard for beginners to start.

Low Impact Exercise

Its also no impact by nature so your feet and knees won't hurt. This makes spinning a great workout for people of all ages, even older adults with joint problems. Spinning even helps increase lung capacity and cardiovascular health.

Cardiovascular Health

The intense workout gets your heart pumping faster, which is beneficial on many levels. I have personally noticed that after spinning for a while my asthma became easier to manage because my lung capacity had increased.
